When it comes to improving our health, it’s easy to think we need expensive gym memberships, intense workouts, or hours of training every week. But there is one unsung, simple hero that can make a significant difference to physical health: walking.
At Corporé, we spend every day supporting people whose lives have been changed by injury. We understand better than most the importance of mobility, independence, and maintaining physical wellbeing. But it’s sometimes not so easy to practice what you preach. That’s precisely why we have challenged our team to walk a million steps this summer to raise money for Day One Trauma Support, encouraging them to put their own physical health first whilst also raising essential funds for others in need.
While many of us may take walking for granted, it’s one of the simplest and most effective ways to support our health. It’s accessible, free, and something most of us can fit into our daily routine. Whether it’s a lunchtime stroll, an evening walk with family, or choosing the stairs over the lift, those steps soon add up and can have a lasting impact on our health.
It’s also not always about reaching that 10,000 step target. For every additional 1,000 steps walked per day, there’s a 14% reduction in risk of becoming seriously unwell up to 8250 steps per day. And that’s not the only benefit…
The Physical Benefits of Walking
Supports Heart Health
Regular walking helps improve circulation, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 12% for every additional 1000 steps up to 9700 steps.
Strengthens Muscles and Joints
Walking helps maintain muscle strength, improves mobility, and can reduce stiffness in joints.
Strengthens Cognitive Health
Walking increases blood flow and oxygen, which promotes the growth of new neural connections in the brain. This in turn improves memory and can help your brain work more effectively.
Improves Energy Levels
Moving more throughout the day can increase stamina and reduce feelings of fatigue.
Boosts Immune Function
Brisk walking can help support a healthy immune system by increasing your white blood cell count – your body’s natural defence against germs and diseases.
Supports Healthy Ageing
Walking helps maintain balance, coordination, and independence as we get older.
Every step contributes towards a healthier lifestyle, particularly for our team who are lacing up their trainers for one very specific and special cause.
Making Strides for Day One Trauma Support
Day One Trauma Support is a charity dedicated to helping people rebuild their lives after catastrophic injury. Their life-changing work provides people affected by major physical trauma with practical and emotional support, helping them navigate challenges and gain optimum independence.
In addition to supporting those who have experienced major trauma in the UK, they also provide bedside support in several Major Trauma Centres and other major trauma hospitals, ensuring no one is left on their own following life-changing events.
What makes Day One Trauma Support particularly special is that many of their team and volunteers have lived experience of major trauma themselves, bringing unique understanding and empathy to those they support.
Their commitment to helping people recover, adapt, and move forward closely aligns with the values that drive us at Corporé every day. That’s why we’re proud to support their mission through our charity challenge in 2026.
As our team clock up the miles, we’re reminded that walking isn’t just good for our health. For many people recovering from serious injury, being able to take those steps again represents determination, resilience, and progress.
Every step we take during this challenge is an opportunity to support our own wellbeing while raising awareness and funds for a charity that helps others take theirs.
